This book on the village of Kind on the Volga River gives a glimpse into those lives of the residents of Kind while they lived in that village and after they migrated or were deported from the village in 1941. Kontora cases, which begin in 1774, then Zemstvo cases also provide color of how our ancestors lived. Census data and family lists provide the nuts and bolts at certain points in time.
The most gripping emotional life comes from someone we know or knew that lived through the difficulties in what was always culturally a strange land. I have my own memories of Volga German culture, having been a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Port Huron, Michigan, which was founded over 100 years ago by Volga Germans from Kind and nearby villages.
The description of their lives provide a strong emotional and intellectual impact on those of us who had ancestors on the Volga in Kind or are interested in hearing the story of Kind or any Volga German village.
Bill Pickelhaupt was born in Port Huron, Michigan. He is the author of 6 books and numerous magazine articles.
